A Pair of Archaic Stone Carvings of Tang Dynasty

A set of archaic stone carvings were rarely in pairs by a ram and a ewe. Obviously excavated from the noble’s tomb which traditionally using the fairy animal as protection guardians or mattress’ weights, the pairs was carved in simple form but in vivid look in depiction of their features and the strenuous bodies. In relax and natural crouching postures, the animal was applied with white slip all over the surface as the basic layer, when colorful paint were supposedly been used to lining their features. But the paint all had been faded away. They were carved by different sizes indicating the different genders. Erosion had caused to the stone surface due to age. And fret was found at the bases. Date: Tang Dynasty(AD618-907). Material: Sandstone . Two custom-made silk boxes are included.
